Causes of Teenage Drinking – Is it Becoming a New Trend  Among Teens

The concept of the teenager is a relatively new one, dating back only fifty years. Before then, boys made a supposedly uncomplicated move into manhood and girls into womanhood. The notion of an intermediary stage of rebellion and experimentation came into vogue with the postwar boom in lifestyle opportunities, university education and consumerism. Since then, advertising and showbiz have projected images of hedonism and glamour aimed almost exclusively at young people who learn quickly that alcohol (amongst other substances) oils the wheels of celebrity culture, with this musician going into rehab or that actress making a fool of herself on a late night chat show. One of the causes of teenage drinking must simply be that it is made to look cool by the ubiquitous force that is the mass-media.

The ‘get tough’ approach adopted by parents, teachers and other authority figures seems not to have worked, with teen drinking more widespread than ever before. A rebel likes nothing more than an even angrier response to his or her behavior, an even stronger reason to rebel. It may be the case that drinking is just an aspect of the rebellious rite de passage most kids make towards a balanced, sensible adult life. How many times, I wonder, have moms and dads said, "It’s just a phase he’s going through" or "She’s just getting it out of her system"?

But some teenagers, of course, don’t get it out of their system, they develop a problem. There are other causes of teenage drinking that are more profound. It is a genetic truism that alcoholic parents will produce offspring who are more likely to seek solace in liquor when they reach those difficult adolescent years. But family causes are related to nurture as well as nature – experts of all persuasions cite lack of parental involvement with and influence upon the early stages of a child’s life as a cause of psychological distress which in turn predisposes them to teenage drinking.

To be sure, economic and social circumstances are major causes of teenage drinking. In both remote rural areas and depressed urban milieux, boredom is the biggest demon affecting the youth. Lack of recreational activities or lack of spending power can result in teenagers grouping together on the street, drinking and making mischief. This cause is often underexplored as it leads into a far more complex, wide-ranging debate about the priorities of our society, especially with regards to public spending and regeneration. While plenty of people of various ages can enjoy a nice drink in moderation, there are others who will always overindulge to dull the pain of difficult lives and gloomy prospects.

In conclusion, the causes of teenage drinking must be addressed to prevent all the negative consequences: illness, crime, unwanted pregnancies and deaths on the road.
