Channels of Promotion For an Alcohol Treatment Center

A lot has changed since the alcohol rehab centers became a popular concept for detoxification in the United States of America. People have become less cynical about this social problem that is now affecting people of all age and economic groups. In fact, people are now readily coming out in the open to discuss this issue with one another. The positive changes occurring in the society and in the lives of ex alcoholics can be attributed to the alcohol treatment centers that have mushroomed all over the country. However, this widespread popularity and people’s trust in these institutions is attributed to the large scale promotional activities that have been initiated by these centers.

In the past few years, the alcohol rehab centers have resorted to various means of promotion and advertising. There are two chief objectives behind this. First of all, the centers need funds to operate smoothly. These funds are necessary to introduce new programs and get the requisite equipments for treatment procedures. Facilities get the funds from two channels. These include the government agencies and non profit organizations as well as private donors. To attract these agencies, it is important for the alcohol rehab centers to go out and publicize themselves. In addition to this, these rehab centers also spend money on advertising to get clients.

In recent times, the alcohol rehab centers have used various mediums of marketing and advertising that have helped them to gain an edge. These initiatives have been designed to make these rehab centers more popular. The following are the most popular mediums of promotion for the centers:

• Internet

What could be the best medium to reach out to millions of people within a few seconds? The internet, of course. Fortunately, the alcohol rehab centers have also realized this and these institutes are going all out to leverage the potential of the internet. Most of these facilities have set up their own websites to cater to their clients and potential sponsors. In addition, a large number of these alcohol rehab centers are opting for online advertising to make their presence felt. Interestingly, the internet is providing the best results within a very short span of time to benefit these centers. Given that the internet has emerged as a cost effective option for these rehab centers, it is expected to gain further momentum in the coming days.

• Television

Owing to the wide reach of the television medium, a lot of alcohol rehab centers have focused on capitalizing on the vast potential of this medium. Several centers have spent aggressively on television advertising while many others have used this medium to create awareness among people. There are a number of television shows and talk shows where representatives of these alcohol rehab centers participate on a regular basis to discuss the initiatives undertaken by them to help people suffering due to alcohol problem. Through these interactive programs, people are told about the benefits of going for treatment at these rehab centers.

• Newspaper ads

These are perhaps the earliest forms of advertisement for the alcohol treatment centers. Through the print ads published in the newspapers and magazines, people are urged to come for detoxification at these centers. They are also provided the necessary details about the center and the duration of the treatment period. Most of these ads are quite basic in nature and provide only the requisite information to the readers. For further information, the readers are asked to dial a number or visit a website.

• Radio shows

Many of these sponsor special radio shows where the listeners are guided about the various facilities extended at an alcohol treatment center. These talk shows often call for active participation from the listeners who are asked to call a specific number and put their queries across. This helps the listeners to learn about the alcohol rehab centers in adequate detail.

Apart from the mediums mentioned above, a number of rehab programs are also using other channels of promotion. These centers are printing pamphlets and leaflets that are distributed on a large scale. Furthermore, these centers are organizing special events to reach out to a wider audience. Notably, these special events are drawing the attention of the public and people are getting to know about these rehab centers in greater detail.

Professional alcohol treatment programs operating in the United States of America are laying a lot of thrust on spreading information to help alcoholics in the country. These centers are also urging the people to make sure that they have adequate information in place before opting for treatment at any alcohol treatment center. According to the representatives of these centers, it has become extremely important to gain complete information about these institutes before going for an alcohol treatment center.

Women, Menopause, and Alcohol Abuse

Over the past decade research has found that for many women the onset of alcohol abuse coincides with changes in hormone levels – changes that many women are unaware of in the early stages. When this is combined with other stresses in their lives – job changes, health concerns, children leaving home – women can find themselves abusing alcohol for the first time in their lives.

In our teens, 20s and 30s, our ovaries and adrenal glands produce a form of estrogen called estrodiol. Later, during our mid to late 40s and early 50s, our ovaries begin producing less estrogen, leaving more of the work to our adrenal glands. As the adrenal glands take over the job, estrogen drops, spikes and drops again-rather erratically. At this point, many women report that they start to get forgetful and experience "foggy thinking" and moodiness. That’s because our brains work better when estrogen levels are steady. These are the first signs of menopause and, sometimes, the beginning of escalating alcohol consumption as a means of easing various unfamiliar discomforts.

While normal menopause is a gradual process that starts between the ages of 45 and 55, there are a number of things that can lead to this whole process starting earlier than normal, in other words – premature menopause. Sometimes these are a result of lifestyle choices that include the following:

1. heavy drinking (defined as more than 1 glass of wine, 12 ozs. of beer, or 1.5 oz. of liquor daily);

2. heavy smoking;

3. poor nutrition;

4. chronic stress to the body – including excessive athletic training.

Indeed, heavy alcohol consumption alone may hasten the onset of menopause by as much as five years.

As we reach full menopause, our estrogen production will have dropped by 75%-90% and we normally start experiencing other menopausal symptoms – hot flashes, tiredness, and difficulty sleeping. Many of us also experience a drop in libido (sexual desire) which can continue well beyond menopause.

Unfortunately drinking alcohol at this stage of life causes more problems than it solves. For example, alcohol itself can trigger hot flashes and increase sleep disruptions. For those of us in midlife who are already experiencing hot flashes and sleep problems (because of the night sweats that accompany hot flashes), alcohol only compounds the problem.

Additionally, Jasmine Lew, a researcher at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, has found links between the amount of alcohol women consumed and a higher risk of cancer. In particular, Lew and her colleagues found that alcohol increased the risk for the most common types of postmenopausal breast cancer. And the more we drank, the higher the risk, so, while drinking one serving of alcohol resulted in only a 7% increase of risk, drinking three servings of alcohol per day resulted in as high as 51% increase in risk.

Further problems occur in the area of bone density because alcohol increases the amount of calcium excreted in the urine, causing a calcium deficiency and eventually osteoporosis. And of course heavy drinking increases our risk of liver disease, falls, DUIs, and motor vehicle accidents.

So what are we to do? Peri-menopause, menopause, and post menopause are clearly times of risk for those of us who find we are drinking too much. With that in mind, if you are over 40 you should consider hormonal shifts as a contributing factor in any change in your alcohol use. It should also be a consideration if you become concerned about alcohol abuse and seek help. Look for a program that will address all of the possible contributory factors, not one that consigns you to a "disease" model as well an unnecessary and inappropriate "lifelong recovery."

Alcoholism in Peru (and Mantaro Valley) Special Report (Parts 1 …

Special Project Report (May, 2007)

For the Universities and Mantaro Valley Region (Junin) on:

The Effects of Alcoholism on the Individual and Peruvian Society as a whole; and how to deal with it in Junin, and the Mantaro Valley of Peru

Agony in the Valley

Part One: is there a problem?

A) The Problem: the question in this overview (or report) on drugs and alcoholism within Junin, and the Mantaro Valley, of Peru, in particular, is: what are their effects on society, the individual, and what can be done to curve mood altering chemical (alcoholism) usage; and do the folks of the Region (and the Mantaro Valley) believe they have a problem: better put, how did we get to were we are at now with mood altering chemicals (drugs and alcohol): and what can we do about it? And the premise of this report, the hidden one that is, is to make aware to the reader, I do believe there is a problem.

In essence, how bad is the crisis for chemical usage and its abuse; and is it bad enough to make the people take action…? I worked for twenty years in dual disorders; that is to say, depression mixed with drugs or alcohol; to include: manic, psychotic and schizophrenic disorders coupled with alcoholism. In this report of sorts, I will be using Lima, Peru, and the USA for comparisons, and connecting them to the Central Region of Peru (which consists of some 12-million inhabitants); that is, Huancayo, and Junin, in particular I will be using some historical data to make my point, that being drugs and alcoholism exists, is a problem not only for the Central Region of Peru, but for all of Peru, and the Valley of Mantaro, along with Huancayo.

B) First we have to define the problem here (and if the people of the Valley believe that there is a problem; or I have to prove there is a problem), perhaps people in the valley do not think there is one, yet there are many suicides, most are alcohol related; also there are many car accidents (as any taxi driver will tell you: ¨Yes, there is a problem in the Mantaro Valley with alcohol.¨ I’ve asked many of them). Furthermore, family battering is also a drug and alcohol related issue, in the Huancayo region. In the USA, 90% of all crimes are drug or alcohol related, and I am sure the data is relatively the same here: as we shall look at some statistics in a moment.

C) The Robber: everyone will agree there are lots of them out there, and why are they robbing and what are they spending their money on (9 out of 10 times it is not because they cannot find a job either); believe it or not, robbers usually do not rob to feed their children, or cloth them, or pay the phone bill or electric bill with the money. They spend the money on alcohol, drugs, gambling and good times. Most robbers rob children, old folks, and women because they are easy prey; they do not want a heavy challenge, they want to get the money, gamble and drink it up it, and they got to continue to rob because they cannot hold a job down living this life style. This again becomes a societal problem. Drug addicts are a big issue in this area, as is alcoholism. And the police and communities seem not to be bothered all that much with it, almost accepting it as a normal norm for Huancayo.

Note (collateral data): With a number of people I’ve talked to about the local problems, particularly with alcoholism within Huancayo, and in particular, with children and teenagers–their main peeve is that there is a lack of cultural, literary, and social outlets, or groups available to them, and with this lack of activates, they feel the course of action they may take is alcohol and drugs: pointing out: economic issue.

Part Two: Some Statistics and Data:

Note: To understand the problem, one needs to go below the surface of the situation, that is where the problem lies, and where one needs to look at, where I have to bring to the reader the issues that exist (to show); and why. One may say after reading this, we all have a lack of resources here to do much about the problem; but we can look at that issue, later:

A) Population figures 1: there are about 12-million inhabitants in the Central Region; in the Junin region 1.2 million inhabitants which includes the Mantaro Valley; a little more than 365,000-thousand inhabitants live in Huancayo; in the inner city 118,000, (and some 488,000 inhabitants, if you take into account the rural area), and around seven to ten thousand in each of the many surrounding town-lets–and about 27-million inhabitants in Peru.

B) Population figures 2:out of this large figure of 27-million, there is about 10 to 13 percent of Peru’s population who are Alcoholics, problem drinkers, chronic drinkers (in the USA, it is about 8%) So out of the 27-million we have about 3.1 million inhabitants that drink to excess, around 80% of Peru’s adults drink, whereas, 70% of American adults drink.

(All these figures can be corroborated, and will not fall too short of my rounding off figures.)

Note 1: In referring to Alcohol Dependence I mean, Alcoholic; when I refer to Alcohol abuse, I am referring to, a problem drinker, perhaps with an antisocial disorder.

Note 2: Often alcohol abuse can be traced back to poverty, stress and issues with cultural mores; whereas, all these elements may exist in the Alcoholic, he has one other curse, he has the biochemical, psychological obsession, the genetic disposition, the saturation of the body with the drug or alcohol.

Note 3: Historically, the Inca Empire also had its excessive drinking habits, due to the trauma of conquest, or continued war, and surprised values, and often they became self-destructive, with behavior by toxic consumption.

C)Crimes and Deaths: In the Junin area, there were 3208 deaths in 2005, of these deaths, about 400 were drug and alcohol related; in Huancayo alone 1200 deaths, and about 160 can be related to drugs and alcohol.
D)The crimes in 2004, dealing with selling and usage: Total Crimes: 3818 of these (drug and alcohol related): 1516 were men, and 472 women.
E)Captured for usage of drugs and alcohol in 2004, were 6425 men, and 536 women.
F)Junin Accidents, in 2004, 271 citizens were hit by cars, and there were 403 car crashes, out of a population of 1.2 Million citizens.
G)Out of these figures above, 1202-people were in jail (or about 20% of the close to 7000 crimes that were committed). In general it has been said 90% of crimes in America are drug or alcohol related, meaning, the person committing the crime, or accident was under the influence. I do believe this figure could be higher for Peru, since all other previous figures are.
H)In one hospital in Peru, out of 276 patients that came in for alcohol and drug issues, 26.1% were there for strictly alcohol, and 22.1% were there for drugs and alcohol consumption, and 15.2 for Alcohol with pot usage (the difference were alcohol and other drug related chemicals mixed, not mentioned here). Again I stress this is one hospital of many, and it has been estimated most folks do not ever make it to the hospital.
I)Drug trafficking is still alive, but I only have date for 1997 to 1999, close to 8-years old. But it indicates this, 14319 drug traffickers were jailed in one year.

The point to be made here is, the point of which this report is trying to say, or make the reader aware of, is: there is a problem in Peru with drugs and alcohol usage, and in particular, the in Junin (Huancayo, Mantaro Valley area).

Part Three: Chemically Speaking and Societal Issues:

A) alcohol is a depressant, among other things, and those who have abused it beyond their capability to stop using it, often cannot define their problems, thinking they do not have one, or unwilling to admit they got one, and it has to do with alcoholism addiction, obsession, denial (and we can add drug usage into this paragraph also); which accounts for: 1) people going to work late, 2) lack of production at work 3) higher medical bills 4) many family issues that would not be issues had alcohol not been involved 5) thieves 6) child abuse 7) car accidents suicides 9) killings and crimes in general. Thus, Alcoholism and drug addiction, and we can add compulsive gambling, becomes a family issue, an individual issue, and a societal Issue.

Note: the question comes up: ´…can the social fiber of the Mantaro Valley in particular, and the Central Region (as a whole), take the strain of its intoxicating unrestrained inhabitants causing all this maladaptive behavior, and what is the legacy that will hand down to our siblings, meaning, if they do what they see, they also will become alcoholics or drug addicts, thus the future does not look too bright.

B) Three: Social Issue: As I pointed out, this is a societal problems, not just an individual one alone, even though the individual would like to believe it is his problem, and no one else’s, and has the right to drink, and do as he pleases, without limits, yes, he wants rights without responsibilities. But can society allow this, can society afford this for everyone around the drug or alcohol user becomes infected with the behavior of the user.

If the people or the government or society as a whole, cannot see it as a problem, but rather a custom, or tradition, it is hard to fix, or prevent. But again, we can see this by the crisis within the society, it is a problem. And it will not go away by itself. And I realize, as I sure all folks in Peru do, programs cost money. But let’s look at the cost of continued usage unabated:

1–In the Hills of Peru there are still coca-growing, as recent as 2006, seven people were ambushed
2–Social Development is unemotional (alcohol paralyzes emotions, thus, the emotional affect is flat); along with the lack of economic opportunities, for they do not develop for the user or the area involved (meaning the area copies its inhabitants, one usually needs to move out of it to find stability)
3–The Rural Sierra country people (which consist of 4.2 million) are on the poor side of the scale, and 2.3 million come under the very poor side. Poverty enhances distress and depression, and consequently comes with it, a higher crime rate to keep up ones bad habits, such as, alcoholism and drug usage, and selling of drugs. The lack of poverty will reduce these figures (it is not to say the rich or well off will not use alcohol or drugs, for on the other hand, affluent and stressful societies seem to bear the same burden, perhaps because of the boredom and spare time available).
4–what we need to do for these Rural Sierra folks is: add Education, societal protection, and help with self-esteem, and the drug and alcohol problem will be reduced.
5–some of the good factors that the Peruvian society has acquired in the past 35-years is that its life expectancy went from 53 years in 1970, to 70-years in 2004. But it is a proven fact, there are no old Alcoholics, they die in their 40s. Along with the life expectancy increases in Peru, alcohol problems increased too, this could have been curtailed with Education had it went side by side with the growing upward on the ladder of life expectancy.

Society’s Alcoholics

Now let’s look at what society is producing, dealing with Dependence (or ripe alcoholics living among the many (meaning; non users). Let me also add before we get into the figures below, in the educational area, recovering alcoholics need to be taught how to live a sober life, or an ongoing recovering life, for the recovering means exactly that, an ongoing sobriety program for him or her. For kids or teenagers they need to be taught how to live a life without alcohol, taught its consequences if the choose it. These figures below represent the whole population of Peru):

Years of Age

12 to 13 years of age 1% of Peru’s children are developing a dependency for alcohol
14 to 16 years of age 3% of Peru’s teenagers are problem drinkers
17 to 19 years of age 11.5% of Peru’s young adults are dependent on alcohol usage
20 to 40 years of age 13.5% of Peru’s adult are chemically dependent
41 to 59 years of age 7. % of Peru’s aging adults are alcoholics
60 to 64 years of age 7. % of Peru’s Elderly are alcoholics (Usually this group becomes alcoholics because of symptoms of aging and being alone, and depression)

Note 1: Suicidal statistics for 2002 (study done in Lima, Peru): 12. 2 % of the populations have thought of suicide, and out of that, 3% have attempted it. So we have a society of 25-million people, and so we have 6.5 million people thinking of killing themselves, and out of that, 195,000-people attempted to kill themselves in 2002, and these are only known figures, I would expect them to triple this amount should the rest of the folks be counted. So I would figure 600,000 minimum tried to kill themselves in 2002.

Note 2: In the Junin region, 2.15% of the elderly belong to adult centers: which is a very small amount, but such centers can occupy the elderly with activities, making their lives sweeter before they pass on, but normally what happens, is when the elderly do not have access, or attend these, they resort to alcohol use, and even at an old age, one can saturate their bodies, to chemically change their internal structures and thus, produce a chemical dependency.

Note 3: In 2002 1120 case of abuse and violence was reported against the elderly, and I believe this is only 10% of the real figure: most of the cases dealt with the female elderly, under the category of sexual violence. Again, drug and alcohol related.

Note 4: Any poor health system I do believe adds to the risk of its citizens in using chemicals for escape purposes. Here are some figures to review on The Health Systems throughout the world: according to the WHO (World Health Organization): out of 191 countries, Peru is number 129, Ecuador is 111, Bolivia is 126, Chile is 33, and Colombia is 22.

Note 5: Lima has 22,000-Physicians, with approximately, 8-million inhabitants; whereas, the Central Region has 7,500-Physicians, with over 12-million inhabitants. Within Junin there are 454 establishments for health care (7 hospitals, 56 Health centers, and 391 Health posts), that may sound like a lot but in St. Paul, Minnesota, which is less than 300,000 people, they have more than 7-hospitals, and an uncountable number of health centers. Lima has 700-establishemnts, and only 8-million inhabitants to service.

Note 6: Many of the women of Peru contribute much of the domestic violence with husbands while under the influence of alcoholism; which produces aggressive behavior, and chronic physical problems.

I feel genetic pre disposition has a lot to do with it. I feel those who do not realize, or care about this (such as kids) do not realize that alcohol is addictive, a family and life killer…

Alcohol Rehab: How Rehab Centers Help Addiction Recovery

Alcohol addiction is a serious disease. Not only can alcohol addiction tear a family apart and lead to financial ruin, it can also lead to the premature death of the alcoholic. Therefore, it is vital for person suffering from this disease to find help immediately. Without help, it is nearly impossible for a person with an alcohol addiction to recover and return to a normal, healthy life.

Choosing the Right Alcohol Rehab Center

An alcohol rehab center is the best source for a person looking for assistance with addiction recovery. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the type of rehab center best suited to the individual’s needs.

There are two forms of help a person with an alcohol addiction can receive from a rehab center: inpatient and outpatient. With inpatient treatment, the patient remains on the premises of the alcohol rehab center. Outpatient treatment, on the other hand, permits the individual to continue with his or her regular life while still reporting to the rehab center for assistance and guidance. The majority of alcohol rehab centers offer both forms of treatment.

The Support of an Alcohol Rehab Center

Regardless of the type of program the person with an alcohol addiction follows, the basics of alcohol rehab remain the same. In all cases, the addiction and other difficulties the patient faces are kept confidential. In addition, the rehab center will also include five primary components: a medical evaluation, a psychological evaluation, therapy, detox, and extended care.

The Medical Evaluation

The medical evaluation conducted by the alcohol rehab center is meant to help the staff identify any physical problems the person with an alcohol addiction may have. Often, these physical problems are actually caused by the alcohol addiction. Problems with the liver, for example, may have developed as a result of the addiction. After medical problems have been identified, the staff of the rehab center can work toward making the patient physically healthy once more.

Improving the patient’s physical health is an important component of addiction recovery. This is because it takes a holistic approach to get an addict back on the road toward recovery. This includes taking care of the patient’s physical, mental, and emotional health. Without this three-pronged approach, the patient is more likely to fail in the process of addiction recovery.

The Psychological Evaluation

The psychological evaluation also provides the staff of the rehab center with volumes of important information about the patient. The psychological evaluation helps the team better understand the patient. In addition, the team of specialists can determine whether the person suffering from alcohol addiction is also struggling from certain psychological problems. For example, it is common for a person suffering from alcohol addiction to also suffer from depression. If this is the case, the program developed to assist the patient will also include a plan to address this issue.

Therapy

Generally, an alcohol rehab center will provide both group and individual therapy to its patients. The group therapy is designed to give the person with an alcohol addiction support from others who are experiencing the same difficulties. Being able to share in the struggles with those who can truly understand often makes the process easier for a patient to deal with.

Nonetheless, individual counseling is also critical to addiction recovery. Having the opportunity to work one-on-one with a counselor helps the patient work through his or her own individual conflicts. Through individual therapy, the patient can come to terms with his or her addiction and work through ways to resolve it by setting individual goals.

Detoxification

In addition the medical and physical evaluations, patients of alcohol rehab centers generally undergo a 24-hour medically supervised detoxification and withdrawal period. During this period, the patient is forced to go without alcohol. For many patients coping with alcohol addiction, this may be the longest time they have gone without alcohol in many years.

The detoxification period is difficult for the person suffering from alcohol addiction because it is accompanied by extreme withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms take their toll on the patient both physically and mentally. For this reason, an alcohol rehab center also provides close patient monitoring and assistance during this period.

Rehab Extended Care

Extended care, which is also sometimes referred to as aftercare, is vital to the success of addiction recovery. Through an extended care program, the patient continues to receive support and assistance from the alcohol rehab center after being released from the more intensive alcohol rehab program.

Extended care programs are designed to help monitor the patient’s success in alcohol addiction recovery. To do this appropriately, the program staff watch over the patient to be sure he or she is utilizing the new skills gained during rehab. For instance, the extended care specialist may work with the patient to be sure he or she is staying away from specific crowds of people that encourage drinking. Or, the extended care specialist may check to be sure the patient is utilizing appropriate resistance skills. Without a strong extended care program, it is easy for the patient to fall back into the cycle of abuse.

Holistic alcohol treatment sheds a new light to alcohol recovery. It practically combines traditional medical approaches with psychological, emotional and spiritual treatment models to effectively address the addiction problem as a whole. Holistic treatments are mainly designed to facilitate recovery by allowing alcoholics to recognize their problem, examine their behaviors, and gain control over their lives. Holistic alcohol rehab centers employ different approaches and techniques from breathing exercises, deep meditation, yoga and other alternative treatments that are proven to be invaluable in cleansing the mind, body, and soul.

Finding the road to sobriety is now easier with the help of holistic alcohol rehab treatments. The holistic approach stays within the boundaries of natural healing, and allows alcoholics attain a better understanding of their situation as well as their abusive behavior.

If you plan to enroll in an alcohol rehab facility that offers holistic treatment, it is important that you gather as much information as you need to ensure that you are making the right choice. It would be helpful if you are aware what ‘holistic care’ really means. The truth is ‘holistic’ can mean a lot of things; therefore, it pays to know what precisely are you getting into. On that note, it is a good idea to ask a particular alcohol rehab facility regarding the holistic treatments that they provide. Some only focus on herbal remedies, while others put emphasis on meditation and hypnotherapy. Therefore, it is critical that you choose accordingly.

It is highly recommended that you exhaust all possible options to find reputable and accredited alcohol rehabs that are offering holistic treatments. You can scour the internet, ask referrals from a medical doctor (especially those specializing in alcohol rehabilitation), look into hospital listings, or drop a visit to a well-know and highly-recognized holistic rehab facility.

Overall, holistic alcohol treatment facilities offer a broad spectrum of services that combines conventional and unconventional rehabilitation approaches to allow alcoholics attain an alcohol-free life!

1. heavy drinking (defined as more than 1 glass of wine, 12 ozs. of beer, or 1.5 oz. of liquor daily);

2. heavy smoking;

3. poor nutrition;

4. chronic stress to the body – including excessive athletic training.

Alcohol and Drug Abuse and Homelessness Part Two

In Drug and Alcohol Abuse and Homelessness Part I, we focused in on the beginning stage of the nasty cycle of homelessness, and painted and interesting picture, and as each day goes, the cycle becomes more vicious to both society and to the individual affected.

Lets take a moment to study a few things, first lets look at societies views on homelessness, and try to figure out why society as a whole has such a conflicting opinion on homelessness as a general rule. We will continue to use and study the Greater Los Angeles area as the model.

Depending on which references you wish to use, you will see that Los Angeles is either ranked number One or Two in the homeless population numbers, whether it may be the cost of living, or the easy access to impairing substances, no one person is sure, however this author feels that it is both.

People start using impairing substances to escape reality, they may take the drink at the bar to lose the inhibitions of dancing, talking or just being sociable, these are well known facts, after all, alcohol as a chemical is a depressant, it should be more commonly referred to as a sensitizers, but none the less the actions generated by use of alcohol is a very common and well understood and factual. Boredom, Anxiety, seeking a exhilarating highs, or looking for something that gives this person a "rush" or a vacation from reality is what using the impairing substance is all about.

How ANY person manages their impairing substance is where the age old debate comes in, is it nature or is it nurture! If its nature, that would mean that the impairing affects of the chemical ingested would result in successful or desired effects, and negative withdrawals or downs which subsequently follow with the disease aspects of substance abuse, would pose the question of, is it really a persons DNA or genes that predetermines his or her personality, behavior or physical attributes to change with the simple use of a chemical?

Or is it nurture?

If its nurture, this would stem from the upbringing of the person and the experiences of this person, or the bio-psycho-social issues, was mom and dad users, was mom or dad big drinkers, did dad drink, and mom pop pills trying to deal with depression because of dads drinking, or was it any combination of items not mentioned, was it the environment in the neighborhood, schools, peer groups during the formulation years of early adolescence to late teens?

So I ask again…Was it nature or nurture?

The only person who knows this lovely secret is the subject or new homeless person in this context, remember, this is a person that has a story, whom which at one point was a producing member of society and as of now is experiencing the devastating physical and mental effects of homelessness.

This person holds the key to understanding what the very root causes of addiction are, and is the basis of study in the formulation of addiction. I feel quite safe in saying that addiction is a purely mental issue. Face it, if the uneducated is in a room full of alcohol, the body just does not reach out and grab something, curiosity does, curiosity provokes the physical act of reaching out and taking, and where does curiosity come from, it starts in Reticular arousal system which is to be believed to have the most to do with alertness or intensity of attention, where is this at? Its in the brain, the brain sets the stage for the curious to experiment, NOT the pure voluntary physical being.

Society appears to have adopted some addictions as acceptable, lets look at your favorite coffee house, you know the one I am referring to, its right there on the corner as you drive from home to work, you see it every day, but oddly enough you don’t see a lot of them on television in the form of commercials etc, but none the less you see them constantly around town. They supply you with the morning mud, that brings about the feeling of peace and awakening, sometimes literally. They aim to please you with customer service, and a warm friendly atmosphere and a great product.

What would happen if you stopped going to that or any other coffee store all together? Are they going to miss you as a company? Not a chance, is the staff going to miss you from a personal level? Possibly. But what about you! Are you going to have issues with irritability, are you going to "feel" out of sync with the day, off a step or two, so to speak! Try it and see what happens.

What we just examined above falls under the definition of addition, tolerant and dependent on something that is psychologically and or physically habit forming!

As one of my mentors Mr. Patrick Prince suggests…"if it does not impair we do not care!", in all fairness I like this statement, however even though the item may not impair, does the act of the coffee issue as presented above portray a potential gateway through to further addictive based behaviors?

What I am speaking of, its the type of behavior where it consumes your thoughts and your time until you have it. I intensely believe it does. The legal aspects of addictions explain itself with the statement that Mr. Patrick Prince vocalizes, "If it does not impair, we don’t care". Drink and drive with coffee, its fine, drink and drive with cigarettes and coffee, the law doesn’t care, why?…"if it does not impair, we don’t care".

Society accepts certain addictions with open arms… is society situationally blind on these items? This author says no, however I feel that society is a "picker and chooser" of acceptable addictions. Society dictates that coffee is acceptable, while smoking is not, society feels that abusing prescription medication is a no no, but medical marijuana is all-right.

All four of the combinations listed above are all habit forming either psychologically or physically, and sometimes both, there is a positive and a negative side to them socially and legally. Lets face this one as well, being that marijuana is creeping its way up to state unification towards federal legalization, the ONLY reason that it has not been Federally and State accepted as of yet is because science has been unable to figure out what the impairing level vs non impairing level dose is yet.

Society reveals an ugly side when it comes to homelessness and perceived addiction, the immediate assumption is that the homeless person is homeless stemming from the abuse of alcohol or drugs, the person that is always at the bus stop with a shopping cart full of plastic recycles is "hooked" on something. The worst part of this assumption is that it is generally accurate. There are those that lost everything from abuse of impairing substances, but remember, they had something, prior to the impairing substance becoming a focal point, these people had a life!

HOWEVER, remembering and knowing that this person has a story that brought them to your view today, and, subsequently NOW knowing and understanding that this person was at one point a producer in the local economy, and a tax revenue generator, and may have had some "vices" as society likes to refer to closeted addiction, has developed a massive defense mechanism to the constant shuns and negativity by society, in the form of abusing impairing substances or escaping reality on a full time basis as long as the money is available at any and all costs to cover the expenses of the escaping tool.

This person is mentally at the highest risk of negative outcomes of homelessness. They are purely functioning on impairing substances and eating very little, there health is supremely at risk, and their mental condition is dissolving faster than ice cream in the Georgia summer.

This person is the power thinker that you may have known, this was the brother or sister of a friend that lost a close loved one recently, this is the principle bread winner in the family that lost everything and ran away because of a bad variable mortgage, this is a person with some serious mental issues that have manifested at this point in life in a reasonably short period of time, All of which stems from societies views and acceptance of what is right and what is wrong in terms of addictions. Remember, alcoholism was a socially acceptable addiction for a great deal of time in the not too distant past. Now, alcoholism is shunned heavily, proven by enhanced legislation, increased awareness via public service announcements etc.

Here is an all important question to think about in which I will answer from my professional bank of experiences which is merely a multiple view assimilation of subjects studied. What causes addictions to impairing substances and provokes mental decisions to be made to chase that all important "high", "rush", "escape" or mental vacation?

I firmly believe the answer is… simply to escape, even just momentarily or perhaps longer from the stresses and pains of reality, to try to gain or and attempt to regain some sort of composure in dealing with a problem, problems, or issues that has adversely affected the person, and I also strongly feel that using to excess allows for a rest period both physically and mentally, whether it may be passed out on the park bench, or nodding out and touching the innermost subconscious, its a break from reality in its entirety for a period certain.

Unfortunately this break from reality becomes so sought after, that all legitimate reasoning get tossed out the window. However its the methods of escaping that draws the criticism from society when escalating to the highest levels of negative or unacceptable addictions as defined by society. Society deems acceptable escaping as going to the psychologist, counselor or spiritual counselor, and talking about the issues, drinking or using substances in the privacy of the home etc, society deems negative escaping as serious addictions that cause crime and other issues as a direct result of escapist behaviors.

Lets tie it all together.

Homelessness is not an addiction, lets be clear on this, I have read research that suggests that a person that is consistently thinking about homelessness may have a hidden addiction or compulsion towards the fear of failure, and elements that create homelessness. I would have to definitely say, that would be the subconscious acting up and creating thought patterns eluding to the realization and projection of homelessness, this would definitely be an issue affecting the spiritual well being, There is a reason the subconscious is acting up, caused by the addiction itself in the form of self management techniques (self-control) the person has developed over the term of their life, they will not realize that its the spiritual aspects that are in desperate need of development and address..

Our society is so hard on failure and addiction, failure is not part of the "American Way", society views failure is the acceptance of loss, or lack of success. This could not possibly be more incorrect and, as such could not be further from the truth, failure should be looked at as another way not to use towards to the ultimate success, and further, that many failures are to be addressed and required for the great element of success is attained. Society looks at failure with a cancerous view, it avoids failure like the plague, or at least the image of failure, but what is the image of failure, is it the homeless? Society says so. This authors definition of failure is simple, the loss of life due to addiction, the loss of living because of fear, the loss of living or life because of human negligence or misunderstanding.

Barring the psychological issues, there is compelling research dancing around the metaphysical elements study of science, that suggests, any positive thinking is very powerful when it comes to realizing and attracting like.

Addiction works like a body builder. Bodybuilders work daily at the gym to tone, shape and develop a discipline equivalent to a Navy Seal, but a key item to remember is, a busting at the veins bodybuilder started off as an infant, as addiction does. Any addiction starts off as a small issue, in which given the space, ability and discipline to grow, will follow into an issue that depending on the item, will gateway into all sorts of problems and addiction based behavior, whether its missing the last 15 minutes of work to catch a show on television, or buying the pricey label of ice cream when its clearly not affordable, or the crack addict that has just completed the 15th theft of high dollar items to support their clearly non-socially accepted addiction.

I am of the full belief that addiction of any type whether it’s minor, perhaps being the socially acceptable addiction, or major as in the substance areas or sexual areas, is a purely mental issue, having said that there is an element of physical addiction that must be considered when dabbling with items consumed, such as colas, foods or substances that are impairing or not.

Its the mental factor that we have to understand. The presence of the slightest physical withdrawal symptom from something as innocent as drinking diet cola, and abruptly stopping, leading to the subsequent headache that develops or the irritation that shows are pure examples of the physical attributes that are present with withdrawal, as you see, the innocence of diet soda or regular soda for that matter know no difference from the withdrawal symptoms of alcohol, oxycontin or heroin. It is just measured in severity of withdrawal and actual physical effects of withdrawal.

So having said all of this about addiction, would it not make sense to look from within to find a reasonable solution to an issue that we obviously know is not physical but mental? Absolutely YES!

The homeless subject that I have been referring to…lets go back and address this person from the time that I stated that the Department of Public Social Services had the first real interaction. As history has shown, all entrants that physically appear to be homeless that walk into the DPSS offices are highly likely to be homeless. If the first person of contact, or perhaps better stated, the person through the glass window focused on the person as an individual rather than the noise of long lines and disgruntled line waiters mustering to "get em in and get em out", would that not create the opportunity to visually assess, and listen to the person talking to that worker behind the glass, and get a good heads up reference to the next level worker that will have the opportunity to interview with more intent the person who is by all outward appearances homeless? Yes indeed.

This second level contact would then start asking questions designed to get the full truth of the person that is seeking assistance barring any attempts to protect their pride, or vanity. The second level worker must have the forward thinking ability to decide on the spot to assess this situation immediately, however DPSS and the sheer volume of people that it assists finds this to be a dangerous issue because of the time elements required to do this brief evaluation to every person.

The case workers need to have more time to not so much intimately involve themselves in the life of the person seeking benefits, they just simply need to develop an element of caring, and an element of assessing with out classifying any one person based on a series of questions and worksheets. No two people are ever the same! Most importantly they must not present themselves as judges to the entrants, which are already mentally weak at the point of entry into the Department of Social Services.

Accepting that our homeless subject was treated with respect, and was immediately identified by the first contact, or the second contact, their odds of successfully keeping this person permanently off the street has dramatically increased using the massive referral sources etc, thus breaking the cycle of homelessness! However just giving this subject what he or she wants without further direction will only cause multiple stumbles and ultimately major falls on the way to re-integration into society and will ultimately lead to serious chemical escapist behavior for the client, and other issues stemming from the "black sheep" mentality.

In the next article we will go over the next stages of homelessness, and will cover some of the beginning spiritual weapons that can be used to promote the homeless person as you see him or her to a level of thinking that "I" am better than what people see, that "I" was not placed here to be in this circumstance, and that no matter what, under the proper care and watchful eyes, of either those that have been through similar, exact or were trained by those that were have direct experience with this population we will begin to develop core understandings of what makes this person tick, what made this person master the art of escapist behavior in the first place, and ultimately address the issues that stand at the root of this persons addictions and homelessness.

Remember something, the next time you see the person on the road, or at the coffee place, or at the bus stop, take a moment and think about what you have read and will read over the next weeks about this population, offer to give this person a business card with an 800 number on it, that will provide them services to get off the street. It only takes a moment, and also, most of these people are so outwardly appearing negative, but inward they are soft and very vulnerable. Expect rejection, if it occurs, just place the card down and walk away, knowing that you helped to end the cycles of homelessness.

Can’t Gay Men and Lesbians Go to Existing Drug Rehab Programs in Texas?

The answer is yes they can. For gay men and women who are secure in their sexuality, sexual preference and the issues that surround them such as internalized homophobia, homophobia, coming out and others, then any drug rehab, alcohol rehab or addiction treatment program may suffice. Unfortunately, that is not usually the case. Most drug rehabs or alcohol rehab programs are not gay friendly, which means having the addiction treatment services and addiction treatment staff necessary to address the issues mentioned above. Without a gay friendly environment or gay friendly addiction treatment staff, the gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender will probably experience attitudes similar to that of discrimination, prejudice and feelings of being judged.

What Are the Advantages of a Gay Addiction Treatment Program in Texas?

In gay addiction treatment programs or gay drug rehabs, the environment is gay friendly. What that means is that the alcohol rehab or drug rehab will have an addiction treatment staff free of homophobia and judgmental attitudes. There will be addiction treatment services specific to the GLBT population, with a staff dedicated to the same. While the internal healing takes place, the GLBT population still participates in addiction treatment services with the rest of the drug rehab.

If you need help locating a gay friendly drug or alcohol rehab, call the national addiction treatment helpline at 1-800-511-9225 or go to www.gay-rehab.com. If you happen to have a psychiatric problem along with a drug addiction or alcohol addiction go to www.lakeviewhealth.com

Alcohol addiction can have its roots in a number of factors. While most people revert to alcohol to change the way they feel, others may use it to relax, to fit in, or just out of curiosity. As intake increases and a person repeatedly experiences the potent pharmacological effect, a one time try becomes an addiction, as the consumer develops tolerance and desire to take more and more of alcohol to get the same effect, and he may then get physically or psychologically addicted. Since alcohol easily permeates almost every cell of the body, large doses can damage the liver, the central nervous system, the gastrointestinal tract and even the heart.

If someone wants help, but at the same time doesn’t need continual supervised care, the outpatient alcohol treatment program is an excellent option.

It must be understood that while a small intake may do no real harm, alcohol abuse may result in impaired judgment and coordination, psychosis, physical and psychological dependence. The fact that it is a curable condition should always be kept in mind.

The outpatient alcohol treatment program helps the patient continue his work and other regular dealings of the day, while still getting help. Patients are required to visit their center on fixed days. The other available options are evening sessions, a weekend program or a weekly group session.

A variety of approaches like problem solving groups, specialized therapies like psychotherapy, cognitive behavior therapy and the twelve-step recovery program are used wherever applicable. This treatment allows patients to work in groups. This way, patients can share experiences, hopes, problems with others, and the like, thus, receiving and lending support.

Most alcohol treatment centers offer outpatient programmes, so finding one is not a problem. Information about such treatment centers can easily be obtained from hospitals, from the National Drug and Alcohol Treatment Referral Routing Service and other health centers.

Alcohol Treatment Center – What Happens in an Alcohol Treatment …

There are many misconceptions of the idea of entering into an alcohol treatment center. Many people see the center as a prison, a place where they are not given freedom to do what they like, a place where they are shielded from the outside world, a place where they are subjected to all kinds of medications and treatments. In fact, many addicts simply don’t like it when you tell them of the need for them to get help from experts in a treatment center.

This article is aimed at educating you on what happens in those centers and are how they are aimed at helping you get off alcohol addiction. Whether you are an addict or you have a loved one who is an addict, an adequate knowledge of what takes place in an addiction treatment center cannot be overemphasized.

Many of the reputable alcohol treatment centers out there have the same objectives and ways of helping addicts deal with the problem of addiction. The approaches include but not limited to detox, education, individual therapy, group therapy and relapse prevention.

The first thing that takes place when you enter an alcohol treatment center is detoxification. In other words, you will be detoxified from alcohol. Every patient is examined and given a detox plan that will include rest and medication. This is done under the close supervision of a qualified staff.

Another thing that takes place in an alcohol treatment center is education. The need to educate the patients on the disease of alcohol addiction cannot be stressed enough. You will be taught about the harmful effects of alcohol on your health and what you can do to overcome it.

Contrary to what you may be thinking, you will not be subjected to all sorts of medications and treatments. In reality, you will be treated based on what is peculiar to your situation. In other words, your treatments will be individualized. Since alcohol addiction manifests itself differently in people, it means that each person should be treated differently. What works in others may not work for you. This is what is known as individual therapy.

The need for group therapy is also very important. When you check into an alcohol treatment center, you are given the chance to learn from the success and failure of other people. This will help you in your fight against addiction. You need success story in order to boost your morale.

The last thing you will notice in an alcohol treatment center is that you are taught about relapse prevention. It is widely known that many addicts often go back to alcohol after undergoing all the above mentioned treatment. This is why it is essential for you to keep in touch with the center even after finishing the treatment. You will need their continual support in order to stray off alcohol for the rest of your life.
