The second I received a postive pregnancy test, I swore off alcohol. Not only can alcohol cause birth defects but it can also cause a miscarriage. Swearing off alcohol for nine months was no big deal for me. I’m not a big drinker and I tend to drink in social situations and even then it’s not a lot. But what about a women who can’t stop drinking for nine months?

If you are one of these women you are putting your baby at a great risk for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. The defects that are caused by FAS can not be reversed and cause serious physical, mental and behavioral problems. Keep in mind, it is usually not one single birth defect, but rather a few problems that are related. Each child who was born with FAS suffers from different disorders but some signs of FAS included:

Small eyes, a thin upper lip and a smooth skin surface between the nose and the upper lip
Some heart defects
Joint and limbs deformities
Slow growth in utero and after birth
Mental retardation and developmental delays

We know that drinking during pregnancy can cause Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, but how much drinking? My own doctor told my wife during her second pregnancy, that a glass of wine here or there would not hurt me or the baby. Common sense should tell you that the more you drink while pregnant, the greater the risk. Alcohol enters into your bloodstream and it does cross the placenta and reach your baby. The alcohol concentration is higher in your baby than they are of you and this can hinder your baby’s developing tissue. There is a high risk during the first trimester, because drinking alcohol then can cause problems with your baby’s hear, bones, nervous system and facial features. I remember panicking during my first pregnancy because I had a few drinks the week before I found out I was pregnant. I cried in my doctors office and admitted that I had drank and was assured that even though no one knows for sure how much alcohol you would have to drink to do any damage, chances were slim that I had done anything to my baby. I was told not to drink anymore and all should be fine.

Another risk with fetal alcohol syndrome is the baby is born almost addicted to alcohol. In other words, the baby has become an alcoholic. Luckily though this can be treated with specific drugs that were designed to treat the withdrawal symptoms in babies. There is no treatment per say for the life long birth defects and retardation although certain heart defects might be able to be corrected with surgery.

So while your doctor may tell you that it is ok to have one drink here or there, ask yourself if you are able to just have one drink here or there. If the answer is no, your best bet is to stay away altogether. It is just not you who is drinking; it is also your baby.
